One thing that surprises me about being a bear; when I tank an instance I'm often in charge of the run. I'm the guy marking targets, defining kill order, figuring out crowd control, making pulls, and often assigning loot rules. I don't mind doing it, and now that I know my own role pretty well I've got the spare attention time to manage the run. But it's always a bit relaxing for me when someone else is in charge of the target marking.
In my old guild two of our best raid leaders were hunters. I've always thought the hunter role was well suited for leading. Soloing a hunter requires understanding tanking, ranged DPS, and crowd control. Hunters are always at range with a clear view of what's going on and good hunters are always paying attention to where the mobs are and where one can be trapped. And we all know Hunters just turn on auto-shot and mash one macro button so they've got time to manage the raid. Also Hunters are often the ranged pull of choice, either via Feign Death or now via Misdirect.
Then again it makes sense for the tank to run things. We can pull pretty well and the initial aggro is useful. We have to keep track of all the mobs, ready to catch one that goes running after the pyroblast-happy mage or the aggro magnet trees. And marking targets requires we organize the pull in our minds, figuring out what casters to LoS, etc.
At this point I consider knowing and marking pulls is just part of my job. But I'd gladly let other folks do it, particularly in instances where I don't know the trash pulls very well.
